Bed-Based Burlesque …[2022]

This performance was me trying to reclaim my body and my bed as spaces where sensuality, sickness, rest and biological functions can all co-exist. To take it back from the medical gaze, ableism and despair I so often experience. Burlesque with it's history of parody and caricature, sensuality and extravaganza seemed perfect for this. Even from a bed burlesque can be made.

Trailer: The Struggle For Visibility…[2023]

When you are housebound you become mostly invisible to the world. Unable to participate in the daily activities that happen outside the door of your home it is easy to start feeling like you don’t exist. In the struggle for visibility we see the artists attempt to become part of the outside world. Covered in a silk golden sheet and staying close to the ground to represent their ongoing separate reality as a chronically ill person they become both hyper-visible in public space whilst at the same remaining largely hidden from view. In their dreams of belonging to the outside world they are desperately trying to overcome all the barriers that this poses for them.

Bed On Wheels.... [2022]

Collaboration with artist Pier van Wijk and Daphnis

This public bed-based performance was inspired by how Frida Kahlo enjoyed the opening of her first solo exhibit in Mexico in 1953 from a bed after being brought there by ambulance.

Although I was no longer bed-based at this time I know that a few months earlier I would not have been able to physically attend this exhibition. To highlight this reality and create a very tangible symbol for the Disability Justice principle of Collective Access fellow crip artist Pier Van Wijk created this bed on wheels and took me from her house to the exhibition space rolling through the city of Rotterdam.

Along the way members of the public were encouraged to help and interact with us and ask themselves the question: why have I not seen rolling beds in public spaces more often?

‘Are you really sick?’ One truck driver asked as he stopped to see what was going on (the first person to actually adress me instead of those pulling the bed). I explained to him that right now I wasn’t but that I used to be and that I had wished someone back then had offered to to make me a rolling bed so I could see the sky and city scape once again and feel a part of the city.

We arrived at the 2022 Creative Unseen Disabilities Exhbition safely though a bit cold. Daphnis documented our journey and I was also live streaming it for people at home unable to participate.

Compilation: ‘Lay Down And Lift Me Up’…. [2023]

In 2022 I became a player for the mixed-ability theater company ‘Speels Collectief’. As a chronically ill player they made the radical choice to include me via beamer as I was not able to perform live.

The 50 minute performance played in several national theaters in the Netherlands and was a biographical examination on how varied mixed-ability players experience their romantic relationships. As players we helped write and create elements of it.
